Most searched questions for LEI renewal in India
My LEI is showing as Lapsed. Do I need a new LEI?
No. A “Lapsed” status only means your annual LEI renewal is overdue. You do not need a new LEI. Simply renew your existing LEI with Bharat LEI, and your status will change back to “Active” in the global GLEIF database.
What happens if I miss my LEI renewal date?
Your LEI status will change to “Lapsed” in the Global LEI Index. While the code still exists, many banks, brokers, and reporting systems may reject a lapsed LEI for: New or renewed credit facilities, Derivatives, forex, and securities transactions, Regulatory reporting and counterparty onboarding. This can lead to delays, extra compliance checks, or even penalties from your bank or regulator
Can multiple company LEIs be registered or renewed together?
Yes. Where several eligible entities require LEIs, their applications or renewals can be coordinated as a portfolio rather than handled individually. This can be particularly useful for corporate groups, businesses with multiple entities and CA/CS professionals managing LEIs for clients.
Can I renew a lapsed LEI?
Yes. You can renew a lapsed LEI at any time. Once renewed, your LEI status updates to “Active,” and you can use it again for all regulatory and transaction purposes.
Do I need a new LEI if my entity details have changed?
No. Even if your entity details change, you should update and renew your existing LEI, not apply for a new one. Each legal entity is allowed only one LEI in the global system.
How long does LEI renewal take with BharatLEI?
With complete documents, most renewals are processed within 24 hours. In many cases, the LEI is renewed the same day if data validation goes smoothly. Delays may occur if documents are incomplete or verification takes longer.
What documents are needed for LEI renewal in India?
Typical documents include:
i) PAN card of the entity
ii) GST certificate (if applicable)
iii) Certificate of Incorporation / Registration
iv) Latest address proof
v) Authorized signatory details (and board resolution, if required)
Exact requirements may vary slightly by entity type; our team will guide you if anything additional is needed.
Will my LEI code change after renewal or transfer?
No. Your LEI code remains the same for the lifetime of your entity. Only the status (Active/Lapsed) and reference data (name, address, etc.) are updated.
What if I accidentally apply for a second LEI?
Duplicate LEIs are not allowed under global rules. If you’ve been assigned more than one LEI, one must be retired. Contact us or your current LEI provider to merge or retire duplicates and avoid compliance issues.
Is LEI mandatory for all Indian companies?
LEI is mandatory for entities participating in specific financial markets and credit exposures, including:
i) Borrowers with aggregate credit exposure of ₹5 crore and above (as per RBI’s phased mandate)
ii) Entities in derivatives, forex, and certain securities markets (RBI/SEBI mandates)
iii) Many corporates dealing with banks, NBFCs, and large counterparties who now ask for LEI as part of KYC
Even when not strictly mandatory, having an active LEI improves credibility and speeds up onboarding.
Can I renew my LEI before the expiry date?
Yes. You can renew your LEI up to 90 days before the renewal date. Early renewal helps you avoid lapses due to document delays, holidays, or internal approvals.
What’s the difference between “Issued,” “Active,” and “Lapsed”?
Issued / Active: Your LEI has been renewed within the last 12 months and is considered up to date.
Lapsed: Your annual renewal is overdue; your data is marked as outdated until you renew.
For regulatory and transaction purposes, you should always maintain an Active LEI.
Do I get a certificate after LEI renewal?
Yes. After successful renewal, you’ll receive:
i) An updated LEI certificate
ii) Email confirmation with your new validity period and renewal date
You can use this certificate for your bank, auditors, or compliance records.
How do I check my LEI status?
You can check your LEI status for free:
i) On the Bharat LEI Register homepage using the search box, or
ii) On the global GLEIF LEI search tool
Enter your 20-character LEI code to see if your status is “Active” or “Lapsed,” along with your next renewal date.
